LIVE REVIEW

SPUTFESSST 2010
SIGUE SIGUE SPUTNIK ELECTRONIC + THE DOLLS + MR. SHARMAN + THE TRADES THE PAVILLION BAR, SAXILBY 28TH AUGUST 2010

Well this isn’t actually as review as such, as one of the organisers of this event I feel it best to leave it to others to convey how they thought the event went.

It was amazing to see so many people enjoying themselves at this event. SputfeSSSt started life as an idea I had to get Sputnik Electronic back at Saxilby where they had played their first gig, playing for free at a non age restricted gig. With the invaluable help of Dean Clark and Lynn Tutty the original idea became something much much more, culminating in an additional three live acts, Sputnik fans camping out in tent city, the launch of the all new Flaunt It Electronic (a limited edition SputfeSSSt edition at that too). We had t-shirts, banners, flyers, the whole enchilada. And still no-one had to pay to attend. Very cool.

First up were The Trades from Southampton. If they were indeed a little nervous at their first public appearance it didn’t show. Covering tracks from Oasis to Frank Sinatra they quickly won the crowd over and returned to play several times over the evening. In fact I believe their version of Oasis Half A World Away ended proceedings for us shortly after midnight. Watch out for these guys.

Mr. Sharman was up next. Already scheduled to support Sputnik Electronic at October’s Mansfield show we believed that SputfeSSSt was the perfect opportunity for Paul to try out his material amongst friends and as we though his instrumental all electronic set sounded great. Very early 80’s sound. S*H*A*R*M*A*N. Hope to hear more material soon and do catch him at The Town Mill, Mansfield on October 16th.

The Dolls - well what is there to say about these guys except they absolutely know how to rock. As I said after Swindon I’m not that familiar with The New York Dolls but the stuff I do know sounded superb, especially Jet Boy. Their unique style was once again well received by the audience.

Sigue Sigue Sputnik Electronic - SSSuperb as always. Alien@tion, Ultra Violence and Hack Attack made their electronic debuts as SputfeSSSt. It always amazes me how everyone knows the words to Ultra Violence, as track that actually never made past the demo stage originally. I’ve heard the song performed acoustically and electronically and it never fails to deliver. Hope it gets released somewhere one day. Martin and Jo looked superb. Degville dropped the fright wig in favour of a hat just like Swindon. Also very cook were his red boots and neither of them would have got through a metal detector. All the favourites were in the set and when Martin forgot the words there was always someone willing to take over =)

So that’s just a series of facts rather than a review. It seemed to me that everybody who attended had a great time. Once again a big big thank you to all of the attendees and acts and of course, once again, to Lynn and Dean, without whom SputfeSSSt really would not have happened.

My only disappointments were the lack of photos I took and that there weren’t more of my regular gigging companions there. I missed you all, yes even YOU lol!!!! I know we put this together very much at the 11th hour so many were unable to make it. I did have a mental wish list of people I would have loved to have been there. I’m sure you know who you all are. Write to me if you’re not sure hahaha.

One person not welcome back……The Vodka Fairy who attacked me during the early afternoon. Please leave me alone next time.
