"Zephyr in the sky at night I wonder" LIVE REVIEW
It was cold waiting outside the venue, there seemed to be something delaying our admittance. When we eventually entered we were confronted with a venue with a stage area even smaller than The Borderline. Once again, MrsW and CyberGeorge secured seating whilst the me, mATTy and aNNIe got drinks and went to the merchandise stall where Pirate Space was being sold by the truckload. The support act (didn't catch their name but their next single is produced by Neal X) were actually quite good. When they had finished we headed to the front and waited.
Sputnik were 15 minutes late getting on stage, finally appearing at 10.15pm, tjboSSS in the new t shirt with blond hair, Degville in a wicked purple suit and X also in a smart suit. Ray Of Light came first followed by Sex Bomb Boogie, to which the crowd went wild and some serious pushing and rollicking started - we got WELL crushed. It was SO HOT you could feel your blood boil. The set followed on with Everybody Loves U, Alien Christ, Demon Seed, Dancerama, Satellite, Jayne Mansfield (which bought on even more frenzy at the front), Slave Trade and Love Missile. The band then left the stage and by this time I had been crushed enough and retreated to where CyberGeorge and MrsW were seated (mATTy and aNNIe had to leave during Slave Trade to catch their coach). The band encored with Success (Metal Hammer version), Rockit Miss USA and Zero Zero. The sound was tremendously loud and the atmosphere very boisterous, yes, there was pushing and shoving going on to an extreme but it SEEMED good natured enough. Maybe the excitement of the release of Pirate Space and the alcohol just overcame some people.
Afterwards a real surprise. MrsW had half recognised someone standing at the back watching. It turned out to be non other than ex Sputtie drummer Ray Mayhew. Ray told me that his own musical project would be off the ground shortly. It was sure good to see him. Now where are Mr. Kavanagh and Miss Ya Ya?
