LIVE REVIEW

SCI-FI SUPERSTARS
THE PURPLE TURTLE, CAMDEN, LONDON 29TH MAY 2009

It’s been a long time since I’ve written one of these. Four and a half years to be exact. Where’s that time gone? Well it looks like, for everyone else at least, nowhere because everyone I met at this show looked great, exactly as they were last time I saw them. More than I can say for myself, just check out the photos, you’ll see what I mean.

Anyway, I travelled down with Shy Girl and Annie which was kinda fun, locked into the back of a car listening to Pink, and Prophet Of Freak of course. We survived the tube journey into Camden (just), met up with SputnikFred and Jill and made our way to the Worlds End pub.

Its was cool that one or two of the old faces did indeed turn up there to meet us, KP, Dr Bones, Lyndon and missus and Leigh B. Anyone else?? You know I’ve got such a bad memory. Lynn and Jo popped in for a couple too after the sound check had finished. So we all had a good catch up and a few beers (and pizza for me!!)

Still you don’t want to know all this do you. Told you it was a long time since I’ve done one of these.

We got into the Purple Turtle about half 8, met up with Giddy Gavin and later Lloyd P turned up too. Had a chat with Martin before the show, thought he looked fantastic, just like he did on all those posters I had on my wall back in 1986.

2 support bands, one good, one not, ‘nuff said.

The Sci-Fi SuperStars came on stage about 10.15, Santi and David first while Martin waited upstairs to make a grand entrance over the intro. All of us old faces, even KP eventually, made up the front row and the intro ended and they went straight into the title track of the new album.

This really was a night for the Sci-Fi Superstars. Old, or should I say classic Sigue Sigue Sputnik songs were kept to a minimum to give the chance for the new material to shine.

I’ve taken this from the set list ripped off the stage by Annie (some things indeed never do change).

You would never have known that this was the first time the band had played together. Martin is still the ultimate showman, the stage and the audience are instantly his. Not gonna describe the outfits, look at the photos. The music was faultless. We laughed when Profiles got played as there were so many people there who didn’t want to hear it (Lyndon!!) My personal favourite, and the song that got the most reaction, was Sunday (I’ve Got Monday On My Mind), that bass line. Proper proper Sputnik sounding stuff just like back in the early days. It’s traditional for Martin to lose his way on at least one song per set. Tonight it was Celebrity (I Wannabe), I don’t think anyone cared to be honest. The Sigue Sigue Sputnik Medley consisted of Jayne Mansfield, Sex Bomb Boogie and She’s My Man. There might have been something else in there I honestly don’t remember. To be perfectly honest and in my opinion the new material came over much much better than the old. 21st Century Boy and Love Missile have been completely reworked. I didn’t like Love Missile much which really surprised me. There’s enough “Shoot It Up’s” in it as it is without adding more.

All in all though it was an awesome first gig for the boys. The only real problem of the night was serious lack of sound from Santi’s guitar. The chap was playing his heart out but it was barely audible. I’ll leave KP to tell you what the sound engineer said. Turned out it was a problem with the type of amp the venue provided. Such as shame as anyone who has heard Prophet Of Freak knows that Santi has the Sputnik guitar riff sound down to rights.

We talked to Martin at length after the show, he was well pleased with the turn out for the show. Sounds like there could be some smaller 2 man electronic shows in the future. All sounds good to me but I hope to see the return of Santi and David too.

So great show, well done guys, told you there was nothing to be nervous about.

And no-one asked for Hack Attack.
