"and if I asked you, and if I asked you, would you like to spend the night with Frankenstein?"

LIVE REVIEW

SIGUE SIGUE SPUTNIK ELECTRONIC
THE PURPLE TURTLE, CAMDEN, LONDON 28TH APRIL 2011

Martin launched Sci-Fi Superstars 2009 album Prophet Of Freak at Camden's Purple Turtle back in 2009 so it seems rather fitting that the first full length release from Sigue Sigue Sputnik has been unleashed to the public in the same place. This gig saw the debut of the full release of the new SSSE interpretation of Flaunt It and the boySSS certainly launched it in style.

SSSE took to the stage at 10.45pm, both of them looking absolutely fabulous. Jo came out first, dressed strikingly from head to foot in blue and yellow and sporting some rather fetching skull jewellery to boot. Top that off with a painted face and fightwig you knew this boy was here to rock. Following close behind came Mr. Degville still looking the same as he did on all those front covers back in the day. His Jesus Saves top was really cool.

Martin had promised us the set would be full of tracks making their SSSE debuts and he didn't disappoint us. I don't remember the exact set list, not having Annie with me to grab a copy afterwards. We started with Sci-Fi Lover which I've personally been waiting to be played live ever since I started following Sputnik. Alien Christ was there somewhere towards the start, as was Transformer Transex. To say they went down well with the audience would be an understatement. Sputnik are always well received in London and the people here tonight didn't let the side down. After the first few songs Martin led us into classic Sputnik material performing Rockit Miss USA, 21st Century Boy, Jayne Mansfield, Slave Trade and Frankenstein Cha Cha Cha. Not sure if this was the first time out for Slave Trade by SSSE? Frankenstein Cha Cha Cha as performed here is a complete departure from the original SSS recording and was a joy to hear. Everyone was singing to everything no matter what period of the bands history. The set ended obviously with Love Missile F1-11 which, as always, caused much pushing and shoving down on that front row.

So for the encore.......well he wouldn't sing Hack Attack or Love Is In The Air so we asked to hear Rockit Miss USA. Just like at Bilston last year we all ended up onstage with yours truly singing the lions share of it along with my good buddy Mr. Leigh Bance. That wasn't enough though, we sang 21st Century Boy too. Like I didn't learn my lesson at Swindon lol I guess I'm gonna have to take some singing lessons.

After that the show did end and as the venues club night started the band mingled for a while accomodating the usual rounds of photos and autographs before finally fleeing by taxi in the wee hours.

So all in all a super cool fun filled evening of Sputnik. Would have liked to have seen a few more of the elite family there. Mind you I only knew I was going for sure that morning and with it being the eve of the Royal Wedding and a long weekend it's understandable people not being able to attend.

It was great to catch up with Lee Jones, John Kovacs, Leigh Bance, KP and Lynn (Nanni McSputnik) Tutty. Hope you all had a great time and are enjoying your Flaunt It Cds. Big special thanks to Dean and Joanne Clark for providing me a bed for the night and some much needed Vodka. Check out the pics of Dean, his contacts are awesome.
