"Trust me I am the one!!" PREVIOUS UPDATES
SUNDAY 17TH JULY 2011
Hi guys, hope this update finds you all safe and well. It's time to go through the developments there's been in the world of Sputnik recently.
I'm going to start with a little bit of business that I'm sure doesn't really need saying but after reading a comment on Facebook the other day I'm putting it out there anyway.
OFFICIALLY as well as for the purposes of this site, SIGUE SIGUE SPUTNIK refers to any recordings, gigs etc. prior to Martin leaving the band and any future recordings/shows by Tony and Neal with whatever line up they choose. Messrs James and X legally retained the right to use the name Sigue Sigue Sputnik and, as far as I'm aware, Martin has never billed himself under that name.
Since 2004 Martin has played as SPUTNIK2, MARTIN DEGVILLE'S SIGUE SIGUE SPUTNIK, SCI-FI SUPERSTARS and now of course SIGUE SIGUE SPUTNIK ELECTRONIC (commonly abbreviated to SSSE). All of which, again as far as I know, he is perfectly entitled to do so. Some Degville shows over the years have been advertised by the promoters as Sigue Sigue Sputnik. This will probably continue to happen so the best bet, if you're in any doubt when gigs are announced, is to check the official sites, official Facebook pages or my Forthcoming Shows page (which I try to keep updated but do sometimes forget to add shows in).
C'MON EVERYBODY
The first new recording from Sigue Sigue Sputnik in quite some time has appeared on the internet. It is currently available as a digital download single in Japan, hopefully a wider release will follow. I think the full track has been banded about a little in the last week as quite a few of us, including myself, have a copy. It's recorded in the full traditional SputStyle, thundering space bass, wild rock and roll guitar and vocal effects. I'm not so keen on the girly samples that run through it but overall it's a welcome opening shot for the recently reactivated band.
The Hotei anniversary album C'Mon Everybody was recorded for is to be released in August, hopefully not just in Japan as I'm keen to purchase a copy of the track and put some money in the pot for the band.
A short video shot during the recording sessions has been uploaded to the brand new
Sputnikworld YouTube channel showing a relaxed and happy looking Tony and Neal enjoying working together again.
Further information on the release of Hotei's forthcoming 30th Anniversary Album - "All Time Super Guest" can be found
here.
SIGUE SIGUE SPUTNIK OFFICAL FACEBOOK
With the promise of further new recordings due in the Autumn it does seem that a Sigue Sigue Sputnik comeback of some sort is just around the corner. Time will tell if this will go as far as producing a new album and tour dates or be just contained to a few new recordings made during their time in the studio. I'm hoping for the former personally.
Further to this an official Sigue Sigue Sputnik Facebook page has been created. Users of Facebook can join it
here.
REVISITED HARD COPIES BACK IN STOCK - STRICTLY LIMITED SUPPLY
Further hard copies of SSSE's recent Revisited release are now available to order. I looked at this on my previous update and track listing details are on my collection page too. In short the hard copy set contains a factory pressed CD of the album as well as the superb DVD of Flaunt It part one. Order details are on
Martin's site now so go grab one while you can.
I believe the next scheduled SSSE release is a remix package for the Fascination track, there was some mention of it on the net recently so look out for that coming your way soon.
SIGUE SIGUE SPUTNIK 12" MIXES 23.08.88
I won this little gem on e Bay recently. The seller obtained it from an EMI employee along with other studio tapes and promos back in 1988. As we all know, Dress For Excess was scheduled to be released as a double album as well and the standard release. The press release promised “different, longer versions, with more guitars, of all the tracks” Unfortunately the album sales did not warrant the release of the extended versions and the release was shelved. Some of the extended mixes leaked out on bootleg cassettes over the years and eventually some saw the light of day on The Ultimate 12” Collection and The Remixes releases.
This cassette features versions put together long before Dress For Excess was released. I've digitized it with the following results,
Sexcess 1 - 2.13, Sexcess 2 - 2.14, Jayne Mansfield – 7.56, Satellite 1 – 6.50, Satellite 2– 3.14, Super Crook Blues – 8.14, Rio Rocks – 10.39, Dancerama – 5.50, Orgasm 1 – 1.51, Orgasm 2 – 3.47, M-A-D – 7.13, Is This The Future – 4.21, Elvis Vs IBM 1 – 6.21, Elvis Vs IBM 2 – 3.55, Elvis Vs IBM 3 – 4.02, Elvis Vs IBM 4 – 3.59.
Both Sexcess tracks are based on the acid mixes and vary subtly from the released versions, as do Jayne Mansfield and Super Crook Blues. I haven't heard either version of Satellite before. Rio Rocks plays as the standard 12” version with a different beginning and very different elongated ending. Dancerama I think is the same as the album extended version that appeared on the 12” picture disc but with a female spoken into I don't remember hearing before. Orgasm 1 is instrumental, Orgasm 2 is more or less the same as appeared on The Ultimate 12” Collection. M-A-D and Is This The Future are the same as bootleg copies I've had for years, the one difference is these sound they are the correct tempo. My previous versions are slightly slower. The four versions of Elvis Vs IBM combine elements all the released versions with (for me) previously unheard material. On the cassette it plays as one long fragmented track, I've split it into four when digitizing it. Although called Elvis Vs IBM all the lyrics included are as eventually released.
Most tracks feature sound drop outs and slight skips and is defiantly a copy of a work in progress. Obviously not digital quality, it's not even a Dolby recording.
I may relist the cassette on e Bay now I've finished with it I really haven't made up my mind yet. If anyone is interested in a copy of the MP3 CD I've made of this then get it touch. I'd mainly be interested in trading. I have several notable gaps in my CD collection, mainly The Ultimate 12” Collection, Blak Elvis and Smart 1. Also interested in any concert video recordings not listed on my DVD page. XL SSS shirts/tops in good condition may be of interest too. Let me know if you think you may have something I'd be interested in.
MP3 UPDATE
Firstly a very big thankSSS to Agung Wijanarko who pointed out to me that the link to the Croydon Underground complete show download was broken. I've now rectified this my friend. Keep checking up on me buddy I'm known for doing quite daft things at times.
Do you remember the Napsterama fan mixes project from 1999/2000? Well I recently found my old CD of this project.
I remember sitting up all night with my 56k dial up connection downloading one track at a time as they were only hosted for a short while. Well I've now put it all on my iPod (with many thanks to Leigh B for keeping hold of the artwork for all these years. I thought I'd share my one of my favourite mixes with you so here's
Teenage Thunder strangenoise excessive mix.
In this 25th anniversary year of the release of Love Missile both Sputnik camps are working on new material. I hope all the daft arguments and flame wars don't start up again. Support one or the other or both. Isn't it great the SSS sound is alive and kicking in 2011?
Until next time take care,

SUNDAY 19TH JUNE 2011
Martin's long promised compilation of re-recorded SSS classics is now available from SPUTNIK2.COM. Limited edition versions of the album were available on factory pressed CD’s doubled up with a DVD presentation of Flaunt It The Movie part 1. Right now the album is only available as a download. I don't know if the DVD will be issued separately at some point. I'm sure if there is enough interest it will be.
REVISITED
In short......I love this album.
FLAUNT IT THE MOVIE PART 1
I assume at some point this will be available to purchase on it's own or with Part 2 if there is a Part 2 to follow. It's well worth a look, just check out She's My Man for a flavour of the full DVD.
So, as I said before, the download version of Revisited is available now. Ordering details on Martin's site or Degville's Dispensary. I don't know if further copies of this special double set will be pressed, best email Martin if you're interested.
LEE JONES 50TH BIRTHDAY
Last weekend Sigue Sigue Sputnik Electronic played a special private show to celebrate Lee Jones 50th birthday. Supported by Roses For The Madman both bands put on a great show for Lee and I was lucky enough to be invited. Thanks for that Lee, hope you had a fab night. Photos and thoughts in the usual places.
NEW MP3 DOWNLOAD
It's been a while since I've uploaded anything so I now present a complete show (even though 2 songs are performed twice so there are only 4 or 5 different songs in the set). Sigue Sigue Sputnik live at The Powerhouse, Birmingham 9th March 1986 can now be downloaded HERE. A permanent link is on the MP3 downloads page. Enjoy!!
JULY SHOWS
Sigue Sigue Sputnik have live appearances coming up in July, playing in London and York. Full details of these are in the Forthcoming Shows section.
FACEBOOK
I now have a Facebook page where gig photos etc. will appear first from now on. If you wish to join me my profile is HERE.
I think that's it for now. Go grab your copy of Revisited and play it loud and often.

SUNDAY 1ST MAY 2011
Thursday night saw SSSE play a triumphant set at Camden's Purple Turtle. Sputnik Elite and casual viewers alike had a fantastic time. More showSSS soon please Martin. A review and photos from the night can be found in their usual haunts.
This video of SSSE performing 21st Century Boy has surfaced on You Tube.
FLAUNT IT ELECTRONIC
So the all new version of Flaunt It is finally available. First copies were on sale at The Purple Turtle show and the album is now available to purchase direct from Martins site.
This final version of the album has been professionally mastered and produced as a factory pressed CD. All tracks have been tweaked slightly. Sex Bomb Boogie, 21st Century Boy and She's My Man have been remixed and Love Missile F1-11 is a totally new recording. Believe me this album demands to be played LOUD!!!! To my ears it has a much heavier sound that it's promo predecessor with enhanced vocal effects thrown in for good measure. Believe me all the hard work from Martin and Lloyd is represented in spectacular style here and is well worth the long wait we've endured for this release. As I said on Facebook, the promo version rocks well enough. This version really does take it BEYOND the next level.
Finally getting the recognition they deserve are two “lost” Sputnik classics, namely Sci-Fi Lover and Ultra Violence, included on this release as two bonus tracks.
Full track listing as follows,
INTRO
Total running time is 46.13.
As I said the album is now available to purchase direct from SPUTNIK2.COM and can be purchased as a download for £10.00 or CD for £12.50. Got get it NOW!!
That's it for now. As always thanks for dropping by. Hope to see or hear from you soon.
Enjoy Flaunt It.

FRIDAY 22ND APRIL 2011
FASCINATION 2 TRACK SINGLE AVAILABLE TO DOWNLOAD NOW
Fascination is the fourth digital single release from the up and coming Revisited package. This song has been around as a demo for a while now but no previous version can hold a candle to this. If any SSSE track deserves a place in the actual chart then this is it. Brilliant, I can't stop playing it, such a catchy track and I hope this finds its way onto the set list at the Purple Turtle next week.
This two track release also includes a cover of John Paul Young's 1977 hit Love Is In The Air. Yes folks you read that right, Degz does Love Is In The Air, showing off his smoother side!!! I did not rate this at all when I first heard it but have to reluctantly admit it's grown on me a little now and while I don't particularly want to hear it performed live I won't skip past it on my ipod.
Unlike the other single releases, there are no lyrics with this and the picture doesn't add itself on iTunes. Still the music is the most important thing and you'll be singing Fascination forever more.
To purchase, click the link on Martin's homepage at www.sputnik2.com, this will take you straight to the Pay Pal checkout. Alternatively you can send £2.10 via Pay Pal to ssputnik3@aol.com stating it's for the Fascination single and in return you will receive the download link.
FLAUNT IT ELECTRONIC - THE OFFICIAL RELEASE
Martin posted this on his Facebook page yesterday.
I'M VERY HAPPY AND PROUD TO SAY- THAT AT LONG LAST- FLAUNT IT - ELECTRONIC VERSION- IS READY FOR ITS OFFICIAL RELEASE.
ALL SONGS HAVE BEEN DIGITALLY RE MASTERED AND RE MIXED WHICH INCLUDES BONUS TRACKS OF ULTRA VIOLENCE AND SCI FI LOVER.
IT WILL BE AVAILABLE AT THE PURPLE TURTLE SHOW ON THE 28TH APRIL AND ONLINE THE DAY AFTER.
IT WILL BE AVAILABLE AS HARD COPY AND DOWNLOAD.
HARD COPY IS FULL JEWEL CASE AND SHRINK WRAPPED DIRECT FROM THE MANUFACTURER. IT ROCKS BIG STYLE!!!!!!!! HOPE ALL OF YOU LIKE WHAT ME AND LLOYD HAVE DONE.
TIME TO MOVE ON. LOVE YOU ALL.
DEGVILLE.
I've heard a version of Sci-Fi Lover and while I don't know if it's the finished version I can assure you it is totally fab. The promo version of Flaunt It launched at SputfeSSSt last year rocks like a mutha like you all know so I'm well excited to hear the final product. Not sure if this image is the final sleeve or just the front of a booklet. It's good to hear these will be factory pressed CD's, all you have to decide know is whether to buy the download and have the tracks instantly or wait for the CD to drop through the letterbox. Assuming you're not at The Purple Turtle of course.
MIGHTY SOUNDS FESTIVAL 2011
Sigue Sigue Sputnik Electronic will be playing at the Mighty Sounds Festival on July 16th in Tabor, Czech Republic. You'll find the events website HERE.
It's good to see the band getting bookings around the world, a few more UK shows would be nice, especially to support the new Flaunt It release.
RAY & CHRIS 2011
What a fantastic photo hey? Ray posted this on his Facebook page. Sigue Sigue Sputnik's original twin rhythm section together again in 2011. Ray and Chris snapped on April 11th in London when Ray's band Mayhem Deranged played London Water Rats. Now who would to like to see these two picking up the drumsticks for Sputnik again?
C'MON EVERYBODY
It seems that the track that Sigue Sigue Sputnik have recorded for Hotei's anniversary album is a cover of Eddie Cochran's 1958 rockabilly hit C'mon Everybody. I wonder how Sputnik they've made it. Release information is forthcoming, keep an eye on SPUTNIKWORLD.
Just 6 days now until SSSE play Camden's Purple Turtle. Last time Martin was there it was to launch Prophet Of Freak. This time it's the first copies of the all new Flaunt It. SSSE are due onstage about 10.45 p.m. Promises to be a good night with many familiar faces attending. Details in the forthcoming shows section.

TUESDAY 5TH APRIL 2011
TRANSFORMER TRANSEX SINGLE AVAILABLE TO DOWNLOAD NOW
Single number three from the forthcoming Re-visited collection is available now. It's an all new electronic recording of Transformer Transex, originally from Martin's World War Four album. This track is one of my favourites from that album and I have to admit, on first listen, this new version did nothing for me. However, having played it over and over it has now grown on me. The tempo is a lot faster than the original track and Martin's vocals have been put through a Vocoder. I'm very much looking forward to hearing the forthcoming re mixes of this. Go grab this single only version now.
To purchase, click the link on Martin's homepage at www.sputnik2.com, this will take you straight to the Pay Pal checkout. Alternatively you can send £1.20 via PayPal to ssputnik3@aol.com stating it's for the Transformer Transex single and in return you will receive the download link.
As with the previous releases you also receive the artwork and lyrics. Download is fully compatible with iTunes.
EIGHTH DAY
Marc Massive has put up a one minute teaser of the EMP 8th Wonder edit of the forthcoming Sigue Sigue Sputnik Electronic Vs Massive Ego single Eighth Day. Full release details are forthcoming and we can expect re mixes of the track by EMP, RadioKillaz, Lloyd Price, Rinaldo Montezz and DJ Sappy. A video shoot is scheduled for April 14th. Massive Ego always went down a storm with the Sputnik crowds when they supported them and this collaboration should appeal to fans of both. Bring it on!!!
You'll find the teaser HERE.
EX SPUTNIK SUPPORTS EX SEX PISTOL
Mayhem Deranged, fronted by legendary former Sputnik drummer Ray Mayhew, can be found at London Water Rats on 11th April supporting Glen Matlock & The Philistines.
Ray posted this on my Facebook,
"I will be supporting Glen Matlock on Monday April 11th at the Water Rats, Kings Cross. There will be some Sputnik friends in common down there and yes, I will probably do Love Missile F1-11 :)"
I see there is another slight Sputnik connection in that Glen Matlock's line up includes former Gen X guitarist James Stevenson. Will probably be quite a night to remember for anyone lucky enough to attend. I am actually on holiday that week but it's unlikely I'll be there. Shame though. Wouldn't it be cool for Mayhem Deranged to play support for Sigue Sigue Sputnik Electronic?

SONIC STATE PLAY CREWE LIVE 2011
Sonic State, fronted by Sigue Sigue Sputnik dub queen Jenny Z, will be appearing live at Crewe Live 2011 over the Bank Holiday weekend 27th-30th May. Full schedule is not available at present but expect 100 bands across 10 venues over 4 days. Cool........Sonic State rock and you should grab this opportunity to see them if you have chance.
Crewe Live 2011 SITE
So it's Italy next for the SSSE boys. They're playing there on Friday and Saturday. See Forthcoming Shows for all the details I have. Following that it will be Camden's Purple Turtle on April 28th.

SATURDAY 5TH MARCH 2011
ALIEN CHRIST SINGLE AVAILABLE TO DOWNLOAD NOW
The second single from the forthcoming Re-visited album is now available. Alien Christ has been given the SSSE treatment and sounds fantastic. This song has always been a real favourite of mine, both as a recording and live track. I'm pleased to say the new version thunders along at a frantic pace and features a very distinctive vocal performance by our boy Martin.
My neighbours are gonna know the track well by the end of the weekend.
To purchase, click the link on Martin's homepage at www.sputnik2.com, this will take you straight to the Pay Pal checkout. Alternatively you can send £1.20 via PayPal to ssputnik3@aol.com stating it's for the Alien Christ single and in return you will receive the download link.
As with the previous release you also receive the artwork and lyrics. Download is fully compatible with iTunes.
PURPLE TURTLE
I'm pleased to say that I will be joining the other Sputheads at April's show at Camden's Purple Turtle. So looking forward to this, I've not seen the band since SputfeSSSt last August. Just got to decide now whether to travel there and back on the day or book a hotel for the night. Ah decisions decisions. Details of the gig are in the forthcoming shows section. Hope to see you there.
TWITTER YE DOC
I've put myself back on Twitter to see if it's improved or not. If you wish to follow me I'm HERE.
Right I'm off to blast some more Alien Christ. See you soon,

WHERE THEY'RE HEADED IS A MYSTERY
This great photo was posted by Tony James on his Twitter feed yesterday. TJ and X together again, looking very relaxed and happy, during recording sessions on a brand new Sputnik track for Hotei to be included on his forthcoming anniversary album. It's really good seeing these two together again and from all accounts much fun has been had working on this project.
Info on this had come via Jason Payne and Shep over on the Sigue Sigue Sputnik Yahoo group and I would urge all those interested in this to head over there for further updates. Shep posted this yesterday,
I was chatting with Tony earlier today - he mentioned that the SSS recording sessions went particularly well... so much so that he struck me as being enthused about Sputnik in a way that he hasn't been for a *long* time. It's early days for speculation, but I think this _might_ lead on to other things.
He mentioned that they used a digital version of the Roland Space Echo for the very first time on this track (unplanned ... there just happened to be one installed at the studio) - which seems to have made a very positive impression; TJ was really singing its praises.
Anyway... the recordings have now been sent off to Japan... hopefully it won't be too long before they get a public airing.
I hope this does lead to a reactivation of Sigue Sigue Sputnik, even if it just a part time project for them both. I'm sure they will quickly realise that there is still an audience for their sound, hell I'm sure they know that already.
I know there was talk on an album around the time of Into The Unknown. I don't know how far the sessions got but I know there would be massive interest in getting this album finished and out to the fans. Along with a few shows to support it too of course. Plus the fact I know a certain young Sputnik fan who would love the opportunity to see TJ and X doing their thing.

FORTHCOMING RELEASES
I think I read that Alien Christ is to be the next SSSE single from the Re-visited compilation. This song has always been a real favourite of mine, even though Martin always fucked it up live lol. Can't the story on it now so forgive me if I've just imagined it.
Flaunt It Electronic has now been mastered and apparently sounds awesome. All new artwork has been produced so hopefully this will see the light of the day in the not too distant future. The pre-release version rocks so can't wait to hear what's been done to the official release.
Also on the cards is a collaboration between SSSE and Massive Ego. Martin and Marc have teamed up on a version of Hazel O'Connor's 1980 top 5 hit Eighth Day. Check out a snippet HERE
YANA YA YA
Can't believe it's ten years ago today since I saw the closest thing to the original SSS line-up I'm assuming I'll ever get. Yana rejoined for one night February 26th 2001 for a gig in Chelmsford and we battled our way through a foot and mouth ravaged countryside to get there. Great days indeed.
Until next time take care,

SUNDAY 20TH FEBRUARY 2011
SPUTNIK ELECTRONIC RELEASE NEWS
Available now is the new Sigue Sigue Sputnik Electronic single Alien@tion. This is the first of four single releases coming over the next few weeks in the run up to the all album Re-visted, a collection of all new electronic renditions of some Sputnik classics.
Martin's official press release reads
Re-visited - forthcoming album!!!!
A collection of my favourite Sputnik tracks from way back when to the present. It also includes two tracks from my solo album WORLD WAR 4.
All tracks have been rerecorded by myself and Lloyd Price.
Trackisting is:
Alien Christ
As a build up to the release we will be releasing singles every two weeks, four singles in all.
This Saturday sees the release of the all new version of Alienation!!!
This will be a download with digital artwork.
You can preorder this now by paypal payment.
Send £1.20 to ssputnik3@aol.com stating that it's for the Alienation single.
Then on Saturday you will receive a link to the single.
The album will contain different versions from the single versions.
ROCK ON!!!!
My copy was in my inbox Saturday morning as promised. Fully iTunes compatible with artwork and lyrics. For me Alien@tion has always been a track for listening to at home rather than enjoying live, even if me and Annie did re-name it Annienation back in the Piratespace days. This all new electronic version has a very polished sound and fits in well with all the previous SSSE releases.
I'm very much looking forward to the Re-visited package, especially Frankenstein Cha Cha Cha and Buy EMI. This boy does love his old 'B' sides. Hopefully further revisited packages will be put together at a later date for our listening pleasure.
Once again, to order your Alien@tion single send £1.20 via PayPal to ssputnik3@aol.com stating it's for the Alien@tion single and in return you will receive the download link.
LIVE DATES
SSSE have some live dates coming up in April. The good people of Italy can look forward to 2 nights of thundering electronic rock and roll as Martin and Johann bring their amazing live show to their shores.
The two dates are Friday April 8th, Scalo San Donato, Bologna and Saturday April 9th, Controsenso Club - Prato (near Florence). More details to follow soon.
The end of the month finds the boys back playing in the UK as Martin returns to the venue where he launched the mighty Prophet Of Freak album. Yes the electronic Sputnik experience comes to Camden's Purple Turtle on 28th April. This is a great little venue that makes you feel very welcome and I'm sure the band are hoping to see many familiar faces out in the crowd on the night. I am hoping to attend but a word of warning to folks far and near, remember this is the night before the Royal wedding so London will be on high alert, very busy and probably fully booked so plan your journey with care.
I've put all the details I have on these dates in the forthcoming shows section. These will be updated as necessary.
NEW LIVE DVD
This has been out a few weeks now but this is the first chance I've had to mention it here. SSSE live at Den Bosh on 4th December 2010. The short set list I believe is because the organisers cut this show short for timing reasons. Featured tracks are
ALIEN CHRIST
Professionally shot once again by BS-FILMS.DE the DVD can purchased by sending £10.00 via PayPal to ssputnik3@aol.com price includes p+p.
SputfeSSSt VIDEO
Dean finally found his missing SD card a while back and uploaded these video's from last years SputfeSSSt event in Saxilby (which for some reason I can't remember as well as I should be able to).
Alien Christ
21st Century Boy
Ultra Violence
Rockit Miss USA
Success
Teenage Thunder
Many thanks to Dean Clark for hosting these videos on YouTube, great memories of a terrific night.
SIGUE SIGUE SPUTNIK RETURN TO THE STUDIO?
Passing this on for anyone not on the Yahoo Sigue Sigue Sputnik group. This message was posted by Jason Payne (JP) on Saturday.
Small update for you guys- Both TJ and X are in the studio recording a brand new
Sputnik Track for an album that Hotei is releasing- More info as I have it.
This is obviously very exciting news, it will be the first Sigue Sigue Sputnik recording since 2004. Looking forward to hearing more on this soon. With Big Audio Dynamite back in action maybe this recording will lead to Tony, Neal and Jenny once again treading the boards as Sigue Sigue Sputnik.
That's all for this time folks. Fingers crossed I'll see some of you at the Purple Turtle in April. It will be a fantastic night for sure, be even better if I can wangle the day off work.
Until next time take care,
Doc xx

Today marks the 25th anniversary of the release of the single that started it all. Love Missile F1-11. I remember the date as it's also my sister's birthday (Happy Birthday Big Sis xxxx). So please join me in digging out your original vinyl, raising a glass and blasting it out loud (and Hack Attack too).
Solid Silver Sputnik Happy Anniversary.
Look out for a full site update, covering all recent Sputnik happenings, coming this weekend.

SATURDAY 8TH JANUARY 2011
WELCOME TO 2011
Hi guys. Let me wish you all a belated Happy New Year. Hope you all enjoyed the festive season.
It seems that there’s quite a lot going on at SSSE HQ. One gig already lined up for this month. SSSE play in Birmingham on 21st January. I won’t be there I’m afraid, such a shame as it’s quite a while now since I’ve made it to a gig. Still at least everyone else gets a chance to be down the front hey? I hear that there may be several track making their SSSE debut at this show so hopefully there’ll be some forthcoming reports/audio/video from the gig.
I've put the ful details in the Forthcoming Shows section.
I’m not normally one for copying and pasting information on my site but this came through to members of the SSSE Reverbnation mailing list the other day and I think it’s worth sharing with those of you that may not have read it.
Hey everyone, hope you all had a fantastic holiday season and all the best for this new year!
Loads going on in the Sputnik Electronic camp at the moment. We're doing the final tweaks on the rerecorded Flaunt It. Some of you may have picked up a copy of the pre release version, so thanks very much for supporting us.
The final mixed/mastered version will include some bonus tracks so hope you'll all support us and grab a copy.
We've also started writing some new tracks. Very early days yet but things are coming along and there's some cool demos appearing.
Lastly we've added another track for you to listen to. Our version of David Bowies Jean Genie is now streaming on our Reverbnation site so have a check and leave us a comment to let us know what you think! The Sputnik Vs. Bowie EP is available from the Reverbnation store if you like what you hear and want to support us.
Thanks and keep the faith!
SSSE
I shall indeed be purchasing the final version of Flaunt It, it seems to have been a long time coming. Hope Dress For Excess it hot on it’s tails too. I have a version of Boom Boom Satellite already and it’s amazing. As for the new material, well personally I’m hoping they all have that classic SSS beat keeping the sound alive in the second decade of the 21st Century.
SSSee you soon,
Doc x
SATURDAY 4TH DECEMBER 2010
VIDEO GAMES
Hi guys, hope everybody is well. Especially those of you living here in the UK. Keeping safe and warm in these Wintry conditions we’re living in at the moment.
It seems like my You Tube account got closed. I have no idea why, it certainly isn’t anything I did so I don’t know if it was hacked or an error on their part but the account has defiantly gone. So I’ve started a new one. Just one video on there at the moment, 21st Century Boy from the 2000 Whitby Goth Festival. I’ll be adding more which will be posted here as well as on my Facebook profile. Don’t forget there is a direct link to my You Tube Channel on this very page.
On the subject of video’s I see Sputdix has posted video’s for Rockit Miss USA and Electro Missile. Extremely professional clips and I agree with others that have said that these should be used as backdrops at SSSE gigs. Keep ’em coming please, maybe you can should a performance video one of these days, now that would be cool.
SSE play in Holland tonight at the Man and Machine Festival. Apologies for this not being in the forthcoming shows section, I have literally just heard about. Hoping for forthcoming photos and videos. Have a blast if you’re attending.

FLAUNT IT VIDEO & SCI-FI LOVER
SIGUE SIGUE SPUTNIK ELECTRONIC **
FLAUNT IT DVD **
THE MOVIE - PART ONE
Nice to see some fighting machines from The War Of The Worlds in there. Watch out for the full length video coming soon with Flaunt It as the soundtrack.
A newly recorded version of the long lost Sputnik classic Sci-Fi Lover will be included on the full release of Flaunt It as a bonus track. A preview of this is currently available on the Reverbnation site. I’ve had the privilege to hear the full completed version of this and let me assure you it is amazing. You will not be disappointed. Just you wait and see.
Sorry for the lack of updates lately, lots going on here at the moment. I’m a little disappointed at the lack of coverage on the internet of recent Sputnik gigs. Hope all attendees had a blast. How can you not I hear you say?

SIGUE SIGUE SPUTNIK ELECTRONIC LIVE IN MANSFIELD TONIGHT!!!
Yes tonight’s the night folks. Sputnik’s triumphant return to The Town Mill in Mansfield after such a storming set there last year which remains my favourite SSSE gig to date. This time the boys are supported by Battlecat, Project and Mr. Sharman who did such a wonderful turn for us at SputfeSSSt. I’m sure this will be a fantastic evening, four live acts all on one bill, very cool.
The unfortunate thing about it is I won’t be there. I know many of my buddies are going and I hope you all have an awesome time. I’ll be awaiting the photos on Facebook like everyone else.
FLAUNT IT PRE-RELEASE AVAILABLE NOW
Following on from the SputfeSSSt edition of Flaunt It, Martin now has this pre-release version available from his website as either a download or cd. As far as I can tell it’s the same as the one sold at SputfeSSSt + Electro Missile short and long and Hack 2010 from the Love Missile single release. The cost of this is £12.50 payable via PayPal to
ssputnik3@aol.com stating whether you require download or cd at the time of purchase.
She’s My Man from this release is available to listen to over at the Sputnik Reverbnation store. Also added now is an all new electronic version of Ultra Violence which sounds amazing. I will be purchasing this a little later on and probably play it on repeat while everyone is enjoying themselves at Mansfield tonight.
Martin and Lloyd have also recorded a version of that lost Sputnik classic Sci-Fi Lover which never made beyond demo stage before. I’m not sure if this will be released to buy as an individual track like Ultra Violence or whether it will form part of an actual release at some point. Maybe as a bonus track on Dress For Excess Electronic. Either way I’m very much looking forward to hearing it. As always a big thank you to Lloyd for his continuing hard work on the SSSE project.
That’s all for now folks. Get those pics from Mansfield posted.

SATURDAY 18TH SEPTEMBER 2010
LIVE IN LEEDS
Just a quick reminder that you can get your next dose of Sput ‘n’ Roll tonight as Martin & Johann bring the fabulous Sigue Sigue Sputnik Electronic live show to Leeds Library. Details can be found in the forthcoming shows page. I won’t be there so take advantage of the extra room down on the front row. Have fun guySSS and I look forward to seeing the photos/videos etc appearing on the web in due course.
If, like me, you can’t make this further live dates are scheduled for York, Mansfield and Lewes. Again dates etc are on the forthcoming shows page.
SPUTNIK ELECTRONIC REVERBNATION STORE
I hope now you’ve all had a chance to visit the new Sigue Sigue Sputnik Electronic Reverbnation Store. Once there you’ll find tracks available to play for free and purchase either individually or as albums. All Sputnik Electronic recordings are available with the exception of Flaunt It which hasn’t officially been released yet. Also available are two exclusive additions to the Sputnik Vs Bowie ep. SSSpace Oddity Vocoda Mix and Ziggy Ziggy SSStardust. Go check ‘em out they are really cool.
Big thanks and love and hugs to Annie for the new Doctor Sputnik banner you may have seen on the front page. Just don’t tell the BBC.

SUNDAY 5TH SEPTEMBER 2010
SPUTFESSST 2010
My thoughts and pictures from SputfeSSSt 2010 are now available for you to peruse. I’ve not actually reviewed SputfeSSSt as such, as one of the organisers I’ll leave it to others to say whether they thought the night was a success or not. I’ve just briefly run through the events of the evening. I was a little drunk to be honest.
FLAUNT IT ELECTRONIC SPUTFESSST EDITION
So what to say about the all new electronic version of Flaunt It? Let’s have some thoughts on the original first.
Flaunt It as released has always been a disappointment to me. I remember racing up town to get my copy. Our little record shop had already sold out of the limited box set so home I came with the bog standard issue. On vinyl back in those days of course. Several friends gathered around to hear it with me. The old needle dropped onto the record and by the end of Love Missile I was a tad upset and by the end of the album I was smiling bravely telling my friends how cool I thought it was. They had loved it but I wanted my 8 Love Missile’s. They left happily enough leaving me playing the thing over and over again. Years later Moroder’s interference came to light but back in ’86 my Flaunt It quickly got relegated to the cupboard while my SSS singles got played to infinity. The Sci-Fi Sex Stars e.p. gave us a glimpse of what Flaunt It could and should have been. As an album those tracks have never achieved their potential, until now.
Here we are in 2010 and Martin has finally given a lucky few a preview of the all new electronic rendition of Flaunt It. While it seems the final release of the album may go through another mastering process (according to the man himself that is), this tracks on this SputfeSSSt edition are fully complete and ready to rock your sound system of choice.
The tracks have been re-ordered and runs as follows
ROCKIT MISS USA/SEX BOMB BOOGIE/MASSIVE RETALIATION/21ST CENTURY BOY/ATARI BABY/TEENAGE THUNDER/SHE’S MY MAN/LOVE MISSILE F1-11
book ended with spoken intro and outro’s (which I would have preferred to have been separate tracks personally).
Listening to Flaunt It Electronic is like being repeatedly kicked in the bollocks for 35 minutes. It doesn’t stop rocking from the opening electronic bass of Rockit Miss USA to the final shoot it up of Love Missile. All the tracks have been given magnificent 21st Century makeovers, songs already 25 years old sounding a fresh and modern and as ahead of their time as ever. This time around though our beloved Sputnik beat pulses through the entire album. Massive Retaliation has become a real hi-energy anthem with Johann doing the shut up shut ups. Every time I hear this I get a vision of Dean singing it at his birthday do last April. She’s My Man is my other real favourite here. Never bettered from the original demo this version thunders along relentlessly. Teenage Thunder, She’s My Man and Love Missile make a great trilogy to end the album and it’s a shame the tracks don’t flow into each other. This Sputfessst edition of Flaunt It features the same version of Love Missile that appeared on the recent digital only single release. Vocal effects are abundant on all the tracks and are very much in the traditional Sputnik style. Each track offers up movie samples too. Mix the whole thing up with excellent production work from Lloyd and Martin never sounding better and you’ve got an album that thrills from beginning to end.
As I said how this limited edition version of the album will differ from the final released version reamins unknown at this time. I find it hard to see how it could be bettered, as it stands is pretty damn perfect in my opinion.
Sigue Sigue Sputnik Electronic have three live dates coming up, York on 24th September followed by Mansfield on 16th October and Lewes on 30th October. Details available until the day of the shows on the forthcoming shows page. Hopefully more live dates will be announced in course. You can play your part in this by contacting Martin with details of any venues you think may be interested in having Sputnik come and play. Don’t just sit there wishing Sputnik would play in your area, do something about it.
Take care until next time guys,

SPUTNIK SOAR HIGH IN SWINDON
Yep that’s right folks, Sputnik Electronic’s set in Swindon last Saturday went down a storm with everyone who was there. Absolutely the best reception I’ve seen since the Mansfield gig last year. Very cool, now if you’re reading this and you weren’t there I want to know why?? Only kidding. The photos and review are in the usual places, c’mon you know by now don’t you?
Thanks to Doc Jnr for taking some of the photos and to the management of The Furnace for allowing him to attend.
'DOC'IT MISS USA
Yes those of you there Saturday will know that towards the end of the night I took to the stage and performed my rendition of Rockit Miss USA with Doc Jnr helping out on backing vocals. Oh boy whatever possessed me. Many apologies to all the people who handed over their hard earned money to see Mr Degville perform and not some old tractor boys from Norfolk. Thankfully just one hard to make out video has surfaced so far and no photos.
I WILL NEVER GET ON STAGE AGAIN. NEVER. NEVER. EVER. =)
SPUTFESSST
Well our little celebration of all things Sputnik shindig is coming around fast now. We are now close to putting up the full list of events so please bear with us. Dean, Lynn and myself have all been working hard on this free to attend event and we’ll be delighted to see as many of you there as possible.
Keep checking the OFFICIAL SPUTFESSST SITE for updates.
SIGUE SIGUE SPUTNIK ELECTRONIC RETURN TO THE TOWN MILL, MANSFIELD THIS OCTOBER
And if it’s half as good as last Octobers show there don’t miss it. I’d never seen a crowd so up for Sputnik in my life and I’m delighted they are playing there again. So keep October 16th free and get your butt to Mansfield and rock out with the boySSS. Full details in the Forthcoming Shows section.
I think that’ll do for this time. Many thanks to everyone who came along to Swindon. It certainly cheered me up no end. See you at SputfeSSSt.

LOVE MISSILE F1-11 E.P. AVAILABLE TO DOWNLOAD NOW!
As a prelude to the release of Flaunt It Electronic, Sigue Sigue Sputnik Electronic have released a four track Love Missile F1-11 e.p. On this release you will find Love Missile F1-11 edit, Hack Attack 2010, Electro Missile edit and Electro Missile extended.
To purchase this download only item send £5.00 via PayPal to ssputnik3@aol.com stating Love Missile F1-11 in the subject line. Shortly afterwards you will receive a link to download the four tracks as well and front and back sleeves so you can create your own CD single if you wish.
>
I’m not personally over keen on the Electro Missile tracks, however Love Missile and Hack Attack ROCK!!!!! You all know how I love Hack Attack and I’ve not been able to stop playing it since receiving it last night. This is by far the best version of Love Missile we’ve heard since the original ’86 versions. Both tracks sound fresh and modern while retaining all the charm of the originals. The mastering is superb, I’ve had it cranked up as far as I can and there’s no distortion. If the album is going to follow suit then bring it on.
I’ve put a permanent link for ordering in Degville’s Dispensary or you can visit Martin’s SITE for ordering info.
Go buy it now.
There does seem to have been a little backlash against this release. As far as I can tell it’s an attempt to recreate the run up to the original release of Flaunt It. How many versions of Love Missile were available back in’86?? These mixes are only going to be available on this release, the Flaunt It version will be different. Obviously the choice to spend your money or not is an individual one. Martin and Lloyd have worked hard over the past year producing a body of work for the fans. These tracks have been tinkered with and tweaked until they are the best they can be. Martin will not release product until he is fully satisfied with it. The album is coming very soon indeed and it’s going to be fabulous.
SPUTNIK ROCK AT SWINDON AND SPUTFESSST
Yes folks the Swindon gig is a week today. Seems to have crept up on us very silently and quickly doesn’t it. There’s going to be quite a gathering of us crazy crazy die hard fans, including the infamous Doc Jnr. I must contact to venue to make sure it’s still ok for him to go. I kinda hope they play Hack Attack I’ve only been waiting 10 years to hear it.
Then of course on August 28th it’s Sputfessst. I had this very very selfish idea a while back that I wanted to try and organise a free Sputnik gig during my 2 week holiday with Doc Jnr, the venue needed to be somewhere I wasn’t going to have to get down on my knees and beg to let Jnr come along. Sputnik had played the Pavillion Bar in Saxilby last July, it was SSSE’s first gig and they made Jnr more than welcome. Everyone who was there will tell you it was a great night. So it seemed the perfect choice of venue, especially as they have camping facilities. Can you imgaine us lot all kipping out there?? Is Saxilby ready I wonder?
Anyway, with the invaluable help of Dean Clark and Lynn Tutty I got my wish and there will indeed be a free Sputnik gig for you lot to enjoy. We’re still not sure what else will happening but we will let you know as soon as possible. I’m so looking forward to seeing everyone get together, especially as Doc Jnr will not be the only Jnr fan there. Talk about Sputnik fans the next generation. I’ve got a mental wish list of people I’d like to see there, I’m not going to publish it though I’ll just wait and see who tips up on the night.
I hope you’re coming though =) And if you wish to buy Dean, Lynn and myself a drink I’m sure we won’t stop you.
I’ve had a lot of shit to deal with these past few weeks in my real life so I’m really looking forward to these two events and the chance to relax, drink a bit, see my favourite band and spend some time with some very fabulous people who I don’t get to see anywhere enough of.
So exciting times ahead with the imminent release of Flaunt It and Dress For Excess to follow + gigs in Swindon, Saxilby and York. I am a little disappointed there are not more shows on the horizon but I know Martin has been working very hard with Lloyd on preparing the forthcoming releases so maybe gigging isn’t foremost on his mind at this time.
Thanks for stopping by, sorry there haven’t been many updates lately. See you guys soon. I’m off to pick Jnr up soon, hope he’s gonna show me how my new camcorder works =)

THURSDAY 1ST JULY 2010
BODYBEATS 2010 ANTWERP DVD
Martin’s set was recorded professionally by BS Films and as such goes far and beyond the single shot audience recordings that many people (including me) have made over the years. Sound and picture quality here is perfect. Multi angle shots paired up with some impressive graphics make this DVD on par with any other band release you could buy in a shop or online. All the songs are titled and there are some other awesome effects which really help enhance the show. This has been put together with much love and care and it does tell in the finished product.
As for the set itself, well for reasons unknown Martin is joined by Ziggy D rather than Johann and he does a fine job on the keyboards and effects. Martin himself is on top form here and appears to be having a great time onstage. He does lose his way a couple of times, I wonder if anyone would really expect anything else. I would say once again that anyone doubting if an all electronic version of the band works should look no further than this set and after watching it you’ll be e mailing Martin begging him to release the new versions of Flaunt It and Dress For Excess.
One thing you will notice is no Love Missile F1-11, the one song you would always expect to be included on any live release. Apparently the planned encore was dropped for timing reasons and presumably Love Missile would have been included in this. The 43 minute set presented on this DVD is the full length show.
The packaging unfortunately doesn’t do the DVD justice although it does contain all the information you really need. Included as an extra is the trailer that was doing the rounds on the internet prior to release. Watching this alone will make you see the quality of the overall product. BS Films also produced the filmed backdrop that Sputnik Electronic have performed with several times and that’s very cool too. I hope they can make it over to the UK to film one of our shows sometime and maybe interview the Sputnik Elite for the extras!!!!
Available now from SPUTNIK2.COM or DEGVILLES DISPENSARY.
So go and get it, you will not regret it.

DEGVILLE'S DISPENSARY
I’ve introduced a new section to the site, namely DEGVILLE’S DISPENSARY. In this section you will find details of Martin’s merchandise as well as ordering details. At the moment it includes just the most recent releases, older titles will be added later as well as new titles when they become available.
Please note that I am just listing details of the merchandise on Martin’s behalf. I neither handle any money or process any orders. I will however try and answer and merchandise queries you may have.
ANTWERP DVD
So, as you will see, The Antwerp DVD is now available. I did drop a quick line to Sput Dix over at BS-FILMS when I saw the track list to see if it was the complete show.
It seems odd there’s no Love Missile F1-11. Apparently the planned encore was dropped for timing reasons and the DVD does indeed include the full performance. I’m really looking forward to seeing this professional recording. My copy is ordered so what are you waiting for? Off you go and get clicking.

MONDAY 14TH JUNE 2010
COMING SOON FROM SIGUE SIGUE SPUTNIK ELECTRONIC
WEDNESDAY 2ND JUNE 2010
Just a quick update tonight folks. Martin’s asked for fans to spread the news on a couple of things so here goes.
First up, copied and pasted straight from Martin’s Facebook page,
FLAUNT IT ELECTRONIC VERSION IS COMPLETE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SO FANTASTIK!!!! SPREAD THE WORD PEEPS. MORE NEWS TO COME SOON INCLUDING A NEW MEGA MIX VERSION OF THE LEGENDARY 'MARTIAN BABYLON" WRITTEN AT SPUTNIK HEADQUARTERS CIRCA 86!!!! Xxxxxxxx
Like you guys I’m sure I’m so excited about the release of this album and I’m certainly planning to annoy the hell out of my neighbours with it. The work Martin has been doing with Lloyd Price over this last year is amazing and I can’t wait to hear the final results. I think they may have been working on an electronic version of Hack Attack. When and where this will see release remains unknown. I remember Martian Babylon being mentioned as a possible track for the aborted third EMI album in the Transmission Pleasure Productions fanzine way back in 1990. It was named as Martin Babylon at the time so obviously one of them is a typo. Dress For Excess Electronic is also in the pipeline to help keep your speakers pumping!!!
So while I’m here I’m gonna give the forthcoming Antwerp DVD a plug too. Professionally filmed by Dirk Goddix (aka Sputdix), Sputnik Electronics appearance at the Bodybeats Festival last month looks to have been captured beautifully. Ziggy D appears onstage playing keyboards with Martin. Can’t wait to sit down with Doc Jnr and watch this. Here’s two links to wet your appetite, a trailer and then Success in full.
Take care guys,
Doc.
SATURDAY 29TH MAY 2010
So it was a year ago today that I threw myself back into Sputnik fandom after taking a bit of a back seat for a few years. Yes it was a year ago today that Martin launched the Sci-Fi Superstars with the amazing gig at London’s Purple Turtle.
I sat down to write a bit of a ramble about the events of the last year for the site and my Facebook page. However it turned into a reflection on my life as a Sputnik fan since 1986. It’s been on Facebook since this morning and I now present it here. Well done if you manage to read through to the end.
SPUTNIK & I
“Switch that fucking shit off”
Or words to that effect.
Seems strange, unbelievable now for sure but that’s what I said to my mate when he kept playing Love Missile F1-11 over and over again. Back in the day, early 1986. So long ago now it seems like another lifetime. I was 15 and just starting to get into music and loving A-ha, The Pet Shop Boys, Dead Or Alive and Billy Idol.
I hated Sigue Sigue Sputnik. I hated that they were on every front cover, TV and radio show I watched or listened to. Hated the twat with fishnet tights on his head and the prat wearing the pink pineapple wig like he was going to some demented alternate version of Ascot. And why were there two other members of the band constantly sneering and trying to be some wannabe rip off Billy Idol clone?
Nope I hated Sigue Sigue Sputnik. I ripped out every picture my beloved Smash Hits ever printed of them. Record Mirror too. These guys were fucking everywhere.
March 1986. Seems like a dream now. Maybe I’m just a dreamer.
Then the band did the one thing everyone thought they wouldn’t. They had another hit single. 21st Century Boy. Ok it didn’t set the charts alight like the previous single did but it did earn them a Top Of The Pops appearance. I saw that, sat in my darkened room with my tiny little black and white portable TV. They were the first band on and they almost got switched off. Almost. But hang on……shit I’m kinda liking this, much poppier sounding than the first one. That’s what I thought at the time anyway. I rang the previously mentioned friend afterwards to tell him. He took the piss. “It sounds exactly the same as the first one, you can’t like one without the other surely?”
Yeah surely not hey?
So off I went into town and picked up every SSS record I could my grubby little mitts on. I came home with the both 7”s, the 12” of 21st Century Boy, the purple sleeve 12” of Love Missile and the soundtrack 12” with the posters.
I played the 21st Century Boy records first. My Dad came in and said something about having brought home some really weird shit. Guess they weren’t so bad after all then. Then I played the soundtrack 12”. And that’s when my real love for Sigue Sigue Sputnik was born. I adored movie soundtracks and dialogue even then and that mixture of soundtrack, electro, punk and sci-fi imagery finally drove home with me. These were the best band ever.
Suddenly my Ah-a posters looked old, I wanted Sputnik on my wall. Ah-a came down. I went round my mates who lived next door and rampaged through all his recent music mags. By the end of the day I had two walls covered with Sputnik and Hack Attack was driving my folks mad.
I’d come to the party and little late. Well probably after most people had left it to be honest. I knew even then that being a fan of this band was something really special. With no internet and hardly any like minded people around it was quite a lonely existence.
Flaunt It was released. I flew up town that day I tell ya. About 10 of my mates crammed into my little room to hear it that afternoon. Not bad for a sleepy Norfolk village and a band no-one liked. Deep down I was disappointed with it. I wanted to hear eight Love Missiles. We all know now why the album sounded like it but at the time I think I was the one who liked it the least out of the 10 of us. Not that I’d ever admit to it.
Still I persevered with it. Sex Bomb Boogie got played the most. I felt somehow vindicated when the Sci-Fi Sex Stars ep was released. This is what the album should have sounded like. I wanted to shout it from the school roof but only one of my friends gave a shit by then. To everyone else Sputnik were already has-beens.
I had a ticket for the Royal Albert Hall show. I have no memory of how I got it. Think it was from a mate’s mate’s brother’s flatmate or something. I dunno. I had no idea how I was gonna get to London on a Thursday night or how I was gonna find my way round even if I did get there. Then my Mother found out I had the ticket. To cut a long story short I didn’t go. Didn’t even get to keep the ticket. Yes folks I was one of the many with a ticket that never turned up.
My one friend who still shared my love of Sputnik moved away in early ’87. I pressed on with being a fan, joined the club and got all the letters but it was getting hard to support a band that, on the face of it, was doing nothing. I left school and got a job and really got into heavy metal and beer. When I got Twisted Sister’s album that year I asked about Sputnik in the record shop and was told they were long gone. Why wouldn’t I believe the guy? Didn’t stop me playing my Sigue Sigue records to myself, being pissed off when Westworld had a couple of hits that sounded like Sputnik cast offs or being the proud person in the record shop yelling “me” when the guy behind the counter yelled out “who wanted this Sigue Sigue Sputnik CD?” Yes CD’s had arrived. Don’t think they could believe someone wanted one.
So by Autumn 1988 I was well into Billy Idol, Alice Cooper and Twisted Sister and getting pissed every weekend. Sputnik were still on my wall and I was getting Melody Maker every week.
Melody Maker announced the imminent return of Sigue Sigue Sputnik. I cried. Real big fucking tears, unashamedly. New single, album and tour dates. I’ve still got the clipping, like many of you have I’m sure.
Fucking hell the day Success was released. I got out off work early, rocketed around to the record shop. “Gimme it on every format you have”. Well that was easy as only the 7” and 12” came out week one. I’d have to wait for the remix 12”, CD single and picture disc. Still waiting for the picture disc!!!
Got home, played it, hated it. HATED IT!!!!! It was well publicised that Sputnik had worked with Stock, Aitken and Waterman on this song but I believed that even they couldn’t fuck around with the Sputnik sound too much. Wrong!!! Sputnik had sold out!!! Well that’s what I thought until I flipped that single over. Frankenstein Cha Cha Cha. Man that got played and played. This was proper Sputnik. More please and I was rewarded when the CD single arrived later with The Last Temptation Of Sputnik as a bonus track. By then I’d kinda warmed to the single mix of Success but I couldn’t stand the acid mixes of Success and that stands to this day.
After all that hype the single got to no.33 and I heard it on the radio once. Great. Worse was to come as we all know. Each single sold a little less than the previous. How Dancerama wasn’t a hit I will never know. Why Albinoni Vs Star Wars was picked as a single I will also never know. None of these singles had the Sputnik sound about them. Dress For Excess came and went, spending just one week on the album chart here and the proposed double album version was abandoned altogether. I loved it, especially Jayne Mansfield of course. Several low key shows and then a short tour helped try to promote these releases. Most of the shows were sold out shell shockers. Pity the attendees never actually brought the records.
By the time Rio Rocks came out my local shop had told the EMI person who delivered the new releases that they had a customer who brought Sputty records week one. The Samba 12” came a week after the rest of the versions and mine had a little post it note attached to front. The EMI rep had thanked me for supporting the band and gave me an early heads up that they were about to be dropped.
Well at least I knew before reading it in the press. By this time I’d met SputnikFred (having been introduced by the friend who’d fucked off back in early’87, he moved to another town and fell in with another Sputnik fanatic, poor soul). So me and Fred lamented the future of Sputnik. Still all was not dead as the band quickly announced plans to release an album of demos.
The First Generation was released sometime in 1990, don’t remember exactly when. My favourite record shop in town couldn’t get it, Great start. The other shop in town did. I like to say that by age 20 I was over rushing home at a million miles an hour to play it. I could say that but it would be a fucking lie. I must have played the thing through over and over again for weeks and weeks. Checking the press constantly for news of Sputnik’s next move.
And that move was? Well the announcement that Martin would no longer be recording with Sputnik and was working on a solo album. By this time Tony was with Sisters and Chris with BAD II so Sputnik were effectively dead anyway so it wasn’t so bad.
It took about a year to be released and then another few weeks to actually get a copy. None of the shops in town could get it. I ordered it direct in the end. It turned up one Saturday morning much to the delight of my girlfriend who was over for the weekend and made me switch it off after one song. Can you believe I married this girl??? World War Four was a real slow burner for me, while it now holds a special place in my heart it’s never been as Sputnik sounding as it could have been and funnily enough Nuclear Powered Sex Machine remains my favourite track to this day.
Martin’s promises of tours and further releases came to nothing. Probably not helped by a total lack of support by the record company.
Sputnik were dead. I promised myself that if ever there was a chance to see Sputnik live I’d grab it with both hands. Yeah fat chance of that. I moved on.
I got quite into Britpop in the mid 90’s. I didn’t give a shit who was better out of Blur or Oasis. Pulp were my boys (and girl). I was so into them, they were the band that finally made me pack my Sputnik stuff up. I let them go. I did a pretty mean impression of Meat Loaf doing an impression of Jarvis Cocker back then. Probably still could but would choose not too these days.
Sputnik The Next Generation kinda passed me by. I believe SputnikFred did tell me about it but I wasn’t that interested. Although I love the album now at the time musically it really was Pulp or nothing.
1998. Pulp’s mainstream bubble had burst. I got married and became a father. Good days indeed and sitting in our family home one night the phone rings and it’s (once again) SputnikFred wanting to know if I had access to the internet which at the time I didn’t. He tells me to check out Sputnikworld.com and that our beloved Sputnik were back.
Well I guess we all felt the same when we read that site. It all came flooding back. The Ultimate 12” collection was quickly ordered, my old Sputnik collection was dusted off and brought back to life. ’98 became ’99 with promises of a new album and live dates. We waited and waited and nothing came other than progress reports on the recording of the album. Closest thing to a Sputnik gig I got was dancing round my front room with Jnr to Sputnik at maximum volume which was a nightly occurrence I assure you.
We all survived the millennium bug as the naughties began. Very early in 2000 came the news I thought would never come. Sputnik playing 4 gigs. London, Whitby, London and Sheffield. My old promise to myself surfaced and I quickly made plans to be at the first London show with SputnikFred. Electrofest 2000. Yeah the wife put as stop to that, the reason is lost in time now although she suggested a weekend away the following weekend to Whitby so I could see the band there and have a nice family weekend.
That’s how April 29th 2000 became the day I’d been waiting for since seeing 21st Century Boy on that black and white TV all those years before. It was amazing, standing right in front of Tony James for the whole show. Old material mixed with new perfectly. And they went down a storm.
By the end of July I had seen Sputnik 3 times, Whitby, Sheffield and London. There was a massive Sputnik online community at that time, yet no-one was posting gig reviews and photos. I had written reviews of my three gigs for myself and decided to share them with everyone. This led to the eventual launch of The Sputnik Surgery website the day before the release of Piratespace and the Covent Garden gig. Dr Sputnik was born.
The following 4 and a half years were amazing, travelling the length and breadth of Britain following Sputnik and meeting the most fantastic people. Sputnik fans are the best in the world. I had people putting me up for the night, taking me for meals, giving me records and videos. All because of my big and simple website I put together with no skills at all. I’m not name checking people here, chances are if you’re reading this our paths have crossed at some point.
So come the end of 2004 Martin had left the band to continue on his own, Tony and Neal played a 7 or 8 date tour of the UK but then fell very silent. By then I had seen Sputnik 35 times. Not being too impressed with the line-ups Martin was playing with from 2005 onwards my interest did start to wane. With nothing to review and not wanting my site to just repeat information from elsewhere I felt The Sputnik Surgery had become irrelevant and eventually took the decision to take it offline. I was still there on the forums lurking in the background but to all intents and purposes Doc had hung up his hat.
During the latter months of 2008 Martin started releasing CD’s of demo tracks from sessions for Prophet Of Freak. Some of these tracks were pretty good and made me wonder what would be on the album if stuff this good was being rejected. OK some of it wasn’t as good but all new material was well received. Finally, on Easter Saturday 2009 Prophet Of Freak was made available as a download. Burnt it to CD and played it loud and was blown away by it. To me the album catches the Sputnik sound perfectly although I know others disagree. Martin announced a London gig to promote the album and I knew the time was right for seeing them again. Ok it wasn’t under the Sputnik name but that night in London was awesome. I caught up with loads of people I’d not seen in 5 years. It was like no time had passed at all. The band rocked and before the last note was played I knew the website had to come back.
That night was one year ago today.
Still big and simple. That describes me and the site. I’m not into flashy looking sites that have nothing to say. You can visit me, read the bits that interest you then leave. I relaunched with my review of The Purple Turtle show and then spent the rest of the year slowly re-adding all my old gig reviews and pictures as well as some of the other old content.
Shortly after this gig Martin formed Sigue Sigue Sputnik Electronic, a Suicide/Soft Cell version of the band that has been playing venues in the UK, Europe and South Africa. I’ve been to 5 Sputnik Electronic gigs so far with more on the way as well as the (hopefully) imminent release of Flaunt It and Dress For Excess Electronic albums.
So it’s been a year since Doc’s rebirth. I’m so pleased that as we enter the second decade of the 21st Century there is still life in and an audience for the Sputnik sound. I’m still hooking up with my old gigging buddies at these shows as well as meeting fabulous new people too. Everyone is as amazing as ever, it’s humbling to have such good friends. I love you all.
And the counter on the site keeps clocking up hits and I’m grateful for each and every visit. Do sign the guestbook if you haven’t already done so. I love knowing who you guys are. Visits from all over the world. Not bad for a site built from the first 4 chapters of The Idiots Guide To Building A Webpage and operated from a box room in sleepy Norfolk.
So going into the second half of 2010 and beyond I’d like to see
• New Sputnik Electronic material as well as more renditions of classic tracks.
As I said, maybe I am just a dreamer.
The old school mate I mentioned at the start of this ramble now works with me and still takes the piss because I didn’t like Love Missile back in the day.
“Switch that fucking shit off”
Never.
ANYONE FOR SAXILBY?
Fancy heading to Lincolnshire in August? We’re looking to stage a Sputnik Electronic show in Saxilby, Lincoln, UK sometime in August. We have a venue ready to book and I’m currently trying to get some idea of how many people would like to come. As far as I know the gig will not have an admission fee. Please e mail me if you’d be up for this and we’ll see what we can get sorted. Do it soon though we need to know. Thank you.
MORE MP3'S
I have two new mp3’s available to download for free. Both are covers of Sputnik tracks.
First up, from several years back now, the only completed track from an aborted attempt to put together a Sputnik fans with bands covers album. This lot hailed from Derby if I remember correctly. They were called The Stance and they out-Sputniked Sputnik with this superb cover of Everybody Loves U. To download click
HERE.
The other track is brand new and hot off the press. Just sent over from those Cyber Glamsters The DiscoKingz is their cover of Sigue Sigue Sputnik’s Pussywhipper. Now just in case you’re scratching your head it’s one of three tracks that Sputnik released following Martin’s departure. I believe Pussywhipper was only available on an album released in conjunction with the I Remember The 80’s website. So anyway here is DiscoKingz brand new 2010 version of the track. I really like this and hope to hear more from them in the future. Hell I’ve still got Cyberspace Lova on my ipod.
To download click HERE.
"PUSSYWHIPPER 2010" a DiscoKingz production, programed/produced by Paul Fitzgerald & Stephen Buxey, Lead vox - Paul, backing Vox Cheryl Burton. Additional backing vox - Steve.
Until next time take care guys,
Doc
SUNDAY 9TH MAY 2010
FINGERS CROSSED FOR NO SNOW THIS TIME
Sigue Sigue Sputnik Electronic played Swindon back in January and I was down to attend but unfortunately the Arctic conditions that were sweeping the UK at the time prevented this. I’m assuming it’s a fair bet that this won’t be the case come early August, you never know for sure though in this fair country I live in.
So yes the plan is to be there, along with Doc Jnr. We’ve already booked a hotel, suppose we ought to get our tickets at some point. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Nicky, the manager of The Furnace, for the lovely e mail I received allowing me to bring Jnr along. You really did make his day and I thank you very much for that.
It does of course mean that I have to be on my very best behaviour. Not them I’m ever anything else of course but no blue shit this time. We’re so looking forward to this show, wish it was this weekend.
Full details of this show can be found on the forthcoming shows page.
YORK GIG DATE AND VENUE CHANGE
Sputnik Electronic’s show at York Fibbers on 20th August has been cancelled. However it isn’t all doom and gloom as the band are still playing in York at the Stereo Music Venue and Bar on 24th September. This is Doc Jnr’s 12th Birthday so I dropped them an email asking if he could attend but they’ve declined which is understandable and not a problem at all. They also told me the reason the original show was cancelled is that Fibber’s is undergoing refurbishment at that time so they picked up the gig by default. Cheers for that guys. The capacity of Stereo is just 120 so if your heart is set on going I’d book tickets as soon as possible. I’m a maybe at the moment but you know me, I turn up anywhere.
All the details I have on this gig are in the forthcoming shows page.
NEW VIDEOS ADDED TO MY YOUTUBE PAGE
It was the 10th anniversary of my first Sputnik gig the other week. April 29th saw at the Whitby Goth Festival experiencing the fifth generation of rock n roll live for the first time. To celebrate this I uploaded two songs from my DVD to You Tube and now present them here too. Jayne Mansfield and Atari Baby. Don’t go looking for me on it anywhere, I was standing right in front of Tony and well out of view of the camera. Enjoy. BTW I’ve previously uploaded 21st Century Boy from this show too so be sure to check that out.
My You Tube page only features clips from shows I’ve either recorded myself, had recorded for me or have traded for, as is the case with Whitby.
FACEBOOK
I’ve set up a new Facebook profile for “Doc” which will be free of all the boring and geeky ramblings from my real life. It’s kind of an extension of the site really. The link for the profile is
HERE if you wish to join me, poke me or just say hello.
U.S. TOUR DATES
Although there has been no official announcement the US tour that was due to start shortly and carry on into early June has been cancelled. I don’t know the reason behind this, all I can suggest to those of you with tickets is to return to the point of sale where you will presumably receive a refund.
Well that’s it for this time, thanks for taking the time to stop by.
Catch ya soon,
Doc

NIGHT OF THE BLUE SHIT PART 2 (THE NIGHT DOC DIDN'T MAKE IT HOME)
Annie declared Saturday as Night of the Blue Shit part 2. I didn’t beat my record which was a little upsetting mind you I had a bloody good go. I got laughed at for being able to sing along with the megamix of Love Missile complete with all the effects and movie samples. Man I thought we could all do that.
I don’t even remember the first Night of the Blue Shit. I’m guessing it was probably either a London or Birmingham gig.
Anyway, Sigue Sigue Sputnik played in North Ferriby on Saturday night as part of the 40th Birthday celebrations for Mr. Dean Clark. This was private function by invite only so I haven’t mentioned it on the site before now. Well what was supposed to be a guest appearance by the band turned into a full on electronic set complete with yet another stage invasion as witnessed at Bilston a couple of months back.
So dear reader you’ve probably gathered by now I was one of the lucky ones invited and I now present a very photo heavy update. Pics and a review appear as normal although it seems unfair to call it a review as it was party rather than a paid gig.
Fookin good night though. Thanks very much to Dean for including me among the invited few. It is so appreciated and it’s done me good to get two doses of Sputnik in such a short space of time.
Speaking with Martin about the forthcoming releases of Flaunt It and Dress For Excess he tells me that they are almost ready for release. He describes Albinoni Vs Star Wars as having an epic quality. We were treated to live electro versions of Rio Rocks and Boom Boom Satellite during Saturdays set, both of which sound outstanding. Hope these CD’s are released soon, seems like we’ve been waiting an eternity for them.
"TEN YEARS ON AND WE'RE STILL AT IT"
Referring to the fact that Thursday will be 10th anniversary of mine and Annie’s first SSS gig up there in Whitby. Has it really been ten years? No grey hair back then I guess. And she still nags me all the time!!! Here’s to another ten years hey. By then it really will be time for Doc to hang up his hat.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY MR. SCHMIDT
Everyone’s having birthdays. Happy Birthday Mr. Andreas Schmidt over there in Germany. Hope you’re having a great day, this update is dedicated to you Sir.
So now we wait for more shows and releases. Don’t keep us waiting too long Martin.
Take care and don’t forget, Doc loves ya.

SPUTNIK RIP IT UP IN BRIGHTON
Well it’s been a little quiet on the Sputnik front just lately. We’re all still waiting patiently for the release of the electronic renditions of Flaunt It and Dress For Excess as well as the Sputnik Elite project too. Was hoping that more UK shows would have been announced by now still I’m hoping that great things will come to those who wait.
So when Saturday rolled around there really wasn’t any question as to making the almost 300 mile round trip from Sunny Norfolk to even Sunnier Brighton for a much needed dose of Sputnik. Very much needed believe me. I say Sunny Brighton, it was after dark by the time we got there. Time to give a special shout out and an apology to the one and only Doc Jnr who didn’t mind a) Dad disappearing off for a chunk of his weekend and b) not being able to go as the venue had said sorry but no. It must be tough being an 11 year old Sputnik fan. Love you loads Jnr and I’m sure you’ll get to see them again soon.
Anyways it was a great night and you’ll find thoughts and photos in the usual places. Nothing much changes around here does it. Tough not for actually getting to speak to people though as the music just didn’t stop so special hello’s to everyone who crossed my path Saturday night. Hope you all enjoyed as much as I did. Sputnik really did rip this venue up!!!!
Thanks to SputnikFred and SputnikBiker for coming down with me at such short notice and to the guys running Spellbound for such a great evenings entertainment. If you’re in the Brighton area their month alternate 80’s club night is well worth checking out believe me.
SEX BOMB BOOGIE DANCE ON DANCE ON!!!
This video of Sigue Sigue Sputnik Electronic performing Sex Bomb Boogie in Brighton on Saturday appeared on You Tube posted by MissCherryFoxx. Did you get a recording of the whole show? Would love a copy if you did.
CROSS DUB MORODER WITH TELEGRAM SAM
Funny how my mind works but being in Brighton Saturday reminded me of a message board posting recently about The King Of Rock N Roll. Why would being in Brighton remind me of this I hear the dear reader ask? Well it was in Brighton October 2001 that this track was performed for the first time and I’ve decided to upload this performance of it from a few nights later. Nottingham Maze 17th October 2001 to be precise. This early rendition features the original lyrics before they were re-written for the final recorded version. You’ll find the link HERE as well as in the MP3 page where it will remain for all time. Enjoy.
That’s it for now. As always thanks for taking time out to visit, I really do appreciate you guys being out there. Guess I’ll see a few of you very very soon and as for the rest of you, well take care for now and maybe someday soon?

SUNDAY 18TH APRIL 2010
Martin and Jo played a shellshocking show last night at Brighton’s Komedia Club as part of the Spellbound Club’s 1st Birthday celebrations. I made a last minute decision to travel down along with SputnikFred and SputnikBiker. Photo’s and thoughts to follow in the week. Needless to say it was a great night!
Until then take care,

TUESDAY 23RD MARCH 2010
March 23rd. I was at The Old Railway in Birmingham 9 years ago tonight with the mighty Sigue Sigue Sputnik. That was the night they sang an early Happy Birthday to me for my 30th. Lots of blurred drunken memories of that night. There’s a video from the show over on my You Tube page. Love Missile F1-11 if I remember rightly. Now I’m nearly 40!!! Just over a year to go……..
Anyways this update is not about me reflecting on where my 30’s have gone to rather than to give you a heads up on Sigue Sigue Sputnik Electronics forthcoming show in Brighton on 17th April.
Two of my favourite words in one sentence for the first time in far far too long. Sputnik and Brighton. I love Brighton, however this is just a short set, scheduled to be just six songs. Brighton’s a long way for me to go for just six songs. BUT I have done dafter things as many of you will know.
Enough of my ramblings, here’s the official blurb.
SPELLBOUND, the 80s night for people who HATE 80s nights, is back!
Venue: Studio Bar at Komedia, 44-47 Gardner Street, Brighton BN1 1UN.
Opening hours: 9.00pm-3.00am
Admission: £5 standard, or £4 with flyer/NUS/DSS
SAT 17th APRIL: SPELLBOUND’S FIRST BIRTHDAY PARTY, STARRING SIGUE SIGUE SPUTNIK!
The last twelve months have flown by, and they’ve been an astonishing amount of fun. Thank you to the people of Brighton (and elsewhere) for proving our hunch that there’s an audience out there that’s hungry for alternative 80s music. We’ll hope you’ll join us when we celebrate SPELLBOUND’S FIRST BIRTHDAY PARTY on SATURDAY 17th APRIL. To mark the occasion, we’ll have our first-ever live guests. Appearing onstage at about 11pm will be 80s cyperpunk legends SIGUE SIGUE SPUTNIK, now down to a synth duo but still led by fishnet-faced frontman Martin Degville, who will be making a short, sharp PA performing songs from the Flaunt It! era in new electro versions. It’s gonna be absolutely amazing!
SPELLBOUND is a joyous celebration of the GOOD stuff, not the zillionth regurgitation of the same old overplayed rubbish. We’re all about the music you genuinely love, not music you pretend to be into for a cheap laugh. Which means you'll hear NO Jacko, NO Jovi, NO Wham!, NO Bros, NO Madonna, NO Astley......
but LOADS of New Wave, Blitz Kids, Goth, New Romantic, Post-Punk, Gender Benders, 2 Tone Ska, Synthpop, Indie, Electro, Alternative Rock, New Pop, Mod Revival, Rockabilly Rebels, Effeminate Futurists, Oddballs and One-Hit Wonders etc. You want names? Siouxsie, Specials, Smiths, Sisters, Soft Cell, Stray Cats, Scritti, Spandau, Squeeze, Sputnik, Style Council, Strawberry Switchblade... and that's just the eSSes.
And we'll be playing it on the original crackly old vinyl whenever possible, cos it sounds better that way. SPELLBOUND aims for nothing less than to restore the reputation of an entire era... and to give you a bloody good night out in the process, without being forced to rub shoulders with wacky students in wigs, or lairy seafront/West St wankers in oversized school uniforms. Look forward to seeing you there!
It does sound like one helluva night. I’ve added this event to the forthcoming shows page where you’ll also find all the relevant links.
Can’t help wishing this was going to be a full on Sputnik gig but hey guess we should take what we can get.
See you guys soon,
Doc

THURSDAY 18TH MARCH 2010
Just a quick update this time folks with a few bits and pieces that have come my way that I haven’t had the chance to do anything with before now.
First up, sent over from Paul(a) Adams is the set list from January’s Swindon show and lyric sheets for Success and Is This The Future from that infamous Bilston show last month, you know the one I have no memories of!!!!
How strange that Martin should need lyrics in the first place……
I’m glad to see I’ve been singing the right words in the shower all these years.
Thanks for these dude, sorry it’s taken me so long to get these scans onto the site. I very much appreciate you sending these to me and I look forward to seeing you guys soon ;) No Vodka this time though!!!
This final scan is the set list for the Anti Christ show a couple of weeks back. A friend of Shy Girl’s called Neil sent this over along with this brief comment on the show.
“Here’s the set list I promised. Like I said, it was an entertaining show, pity I had a restricted view! The crowd seemed to love it and the main room was packed for the show.”
All sounds pretty good to me, thanks to Shy Girl and Neil for this.
That’s it for now, it’s all a little quiet here at DocSputnik HQ at the moment. Hope all you guys are well, catch you soon.

Put simply, a 16 track electronic masterpiece. The first 8 tracks are all new SSSE renderings of some old Sputnik favourites, 4 of which have been released as digital only singles over the past few months. The mixes here are different though. On top of that there's Frankenstein Cha Cha Cha which is a complete departure from the original track. A totally new arrangement that some of you may have heard played live recently. Be warned this will get into your head pretty quick. Slave Trade is pretty faithful to the original and is destined to remain a live favourite. Sci-Fi Lover has previously been issued as a bonus track on Flaunt It. A true lost SSS classic. For me though it's Buy EMI that's the winner here. I always really loved this track and the new SSSE version does not disappoint. Pure electronic rock n roll with some perfectly placed and very apt movie samples this track has been on repeat here at Doc's HQ for quite a while now.
Alongside all the work that Martin and Lloyd have put into this project there are also 8 remixes. Alien Christ - Joystixx' Future Hell Mix, Sci-Fi Lover - Goteki's Chestburster Love Mix, Transformer Transex - Mr. Sharman's Implant Transformation Remix, Bride of Frankenstein - Frank Einstein's Mad Monster Remix, Fascination - V2A Mix, Slave Trade - Manek Deboto's Slave Station Mix, Unknown Soul - Burn In Hell Mix. There is some real talent on show here. Goteki have long been Sputnik fan favourites and by listening to the final product I assume all these guys are fans as much love and time has quite obviously been put into each track. My favourite of all these is Alien Christ, the remix takes the song out of it's comfort zone for 2011. Special mention must also go to Mr. Sharman who has worked magic with one of my favourite tracks from WW4.
Also included on this limited edition release is the long awaited DVD Flaunt It The Movie part 1. Produced by SputDix for BS-Films this DVD takes the pre release version of Flaunt It and sets each track to a plethora of sci-fi, sex and Sputnik imagery. It's one hell of a trip believe me. The album is presented in full, although Teenage Thunder and She's My Man have been swapped round in the running order. As a bonus there are also videos for Hack Attack (my personal favourite no surprise there hey?) and Electro Missile. Being the geek I am I loved all the old sci-fi clips from movies such as Creature From The Black Lagoon, This Island Earth, Earth Vs The Flying Saucers and War Of The Worlds to name just a few. More than a splattering of A Clockwork Orange too. You may not want to let young fanSSS watch this, there are a few naughty bits too.
