LIVE REVIEW

SIGUE SIGUE SPUTNIK
THE PARK, PETERBOROUGH 18TH MAY 2001

Review by Roy Anderson.

I have kindly been asked by the doc to write a review of the Sigue Sigue Sputnik concert I attended on Friday 18th May 2001 at The Park in Peterborough. I should start by making a few points clear to everyone.

This is the 1st review I've ever written.

It was the 1st Sigue Sigue Sputnik concert I've ever been to.

Not being a die hard fan like everyone who reads this, my main reasons for going were observation and curiosity, having heard a lot about the band from the doc.

The band came on stage at about 10.30PM, (no support band), to a big cheer from the eager crowd. After an initial problem with the sound from Martin's microphone (which lasted about 3 songs), the band got into their stride with a selection of old songs, current songs and the odd cover version thrown in for good measure.

The sheer enthusiasm of each member of the band shines through on stage. I personally liked Neal's guitar playing. They know how to work the crowd very well, when the concert was over a friend of mine said "not so much a Sigue Sigue Sputnik concert more a Sigue Sigue Sputnik stage show", a point I agree with. Of the songs they played I recognised Love Missile F1-11 which got the biggest cheer and the most people dancing. During Love Missile the resident DJ got up on the stage and proceeded to join in with the band whilst brandishing a toy gun at the crowd, much to everyone's amusement. Jayne Mansfield is one of my personal favourites and Rebel Rebel, the old David Bowie track, I thought their rendition of this song was excellent. Thanks to the doc I'm slowly getting to know some of the other songs as well. They played for about an hour, then came back on for an encore.

So, another SSS gig was over. For the fans I'm sure it was a great night. For me, a neutral observer, it was an experience I will not forget for a long time. On one level it was a night of rock n roll music, which is fine by me. Did I have a good time......yes. Would I go again......possibly. Have I been converted......

The jury is still out on that one.

Many thanks to Roy for this review, I can't remember the exact set list. All the standards were there except Alien Christ!!!!! Tony looked great in his Sputnik Fuck shirt, X man appeared in an X files shirt for the encore. The crowd were very appreciative of the band, much more so than I thought Peterborough would be. It's a Godsend to get a gig so close to home for a change. I met some great people too, Rachel, Jenny and Jon of course I already know. Also Penny, Barry, DJ Coyote and Plastique helped make this a great night. Poor old Penny later told me she'd lost her voice, that's a common problem believe me. I normally can't hear properly either, I know Roy couldn't for a few days after. BTW sorry I never got any photo's of most of you. Next time we're altogether???

Just wish the band hadn't played Always On My Mind, it really isn't my favourite song.

How did the video come out Jenny?
