"ultra violence in Japan" LIVE REVIEW
Sigue Sigue Sputnik Electronic’s set at this venue was part of the first birthday celebrations of the Spellbound club, a club night specialising in alternate 80’s music. Spellbound is held once a month in The Studio Bar at Komedia in Brighton and is well worth checking out.
So as I said, Sputnik were scheduled to perform a six song set covering just Flaunt It although they eventually played eight songs with material from Dress For Excess and Smart 1 too.
They arrived onstage promptly at 11 o’ clock, both guys looked stunning especially the white frightmask which I hadn’t seen before. After a call for more smoke (where’s Zammo when you need him) they launched into Rockit Miss USA.
What followed was a fast paced, tight and totally rocking 35-40 minute set during which Martin never missed a beat. Much more together than at Bilston although I think we were all a little off our game that night. Both chaps looked very at ease on stage here and really seemed to be enjoying themselves. There was the odd missed lyric. Me and Fred did our best to fill in but I doubt many other people noticed or cared. This was my 40th Sputnik gig so I guess I should know most of the words by now.
Sputnik have always gone down a storm in Brighton and this was no exception. The small but totally full venue went crazeeee for the band and it was quite a crush down the front. One young lady next to me was really going for it bless her and I aplologise for not remembering her name having promised to name check her on the site. I think the idea was to play the first six songs then come back on for the final two as an encore but they couldn’t get off the stage and just got on with it instead.
The full set was as follows,
ROCKIT MISS USA
The whole set was performed in front of a video backdrop that was put together by Sputdix. Featuring footage of various movies and previous Sputnik performances I personally found this very effective and hope to see it used again. Such a shame the two all new electronic renditions of Flaunt It and Dress For Excess aren’t available yet, the dude in charge of merchandise would have sold stack loads of them.
After the show Martin and Jo came out for photos and autographs. I had a very brief chat with them but let the newbie’s have their time with them, including the aforementioned “girl from the front row” and her friend whose name I’ve also forgotten. I couldn’t really chat properly anyway as I suffer from tinnitus and it was really playing me up after this set, probably because there was no break in the music between the DJ set and the band. And it was soooo loud. Either that or I really am getting to old for this rock n roll shit.
It’s hard to give shout outs when you can’t remember names. Thanks to SputnikFred and SputnikBiker for travelling down with me and keeping me company. Lloyd and his wife were there so shouts and lovings to them and anyone who I spoke to on the night.
More Brighton shows soon please Martin. Thanks.
THE ONLY FOUR PHOTOS TAKEN AFTER THE SHOW. I WISH I COULD REMEMBER THEIR NAMES BUT ALAS, I CAN'T.
