"it's doomsday it's doomsday" LIVE REVIEW
I couldn't find the venue!! It's bloody typical isn't it. The miles I've travelled these last 14 months following the band around the country yet, when they play a venue only 40 miles away from home I get lost. Many thanks to those inhabitants of Cambridge who did help me find just where the hell I was going.
I arrived just after 9.30PM and thought I was just in time as it had said on Sputnikworld that the band were due on stage at that time. However, as I approached the doors I could hear Alien@tion being belted out. So, I got my ticket (numbered 74 although there were more people there than that), made my way through the crowd and met up with Rachel and Andy.
The stage area was very big, very reminiscent of Whitby in fact, which was very atmospheric and gave the band a chance to move around a lot more than at recent gigs. Lisa came out loads during the set, interacting with both Martin and Neal. Martin looked superb tonight in his white waistcoat (complete with The Joker on the back), white trousers and belt. Tony was wearing the red top from the 88/89 era logo on it. Neal looked like an extra from Miami Vice.
Virginia Plain followed, then Jayne Mansfield, Slave Trade, Love Missile F1-11 (including the riff from Dancing With Myself). They encored with Rebel Rebel and Rockit Miss USA.
The capacity of The Junction is 850 so there was no way anyone expected a sell out. However, the crowd that had gathered (150+??) really seemed to be enjoying themselves. Lots of new faces there tonight, all singing along with the older numbers and, according to Tony afterwards, quite a few of them left with some sPUTTy goodies from the stall. Hopefully some old fans that were there are gonna now stick with them!!
Tony was saying afterwards that when the band (finally) finish with this period of gigging it's straight back into the studio for more recording, (I assume he means the Elvis album?? but hopefully maybe some sessions for the follow up to piratespace). Martin also came over and spoke briefly but there seemed to be lots of people wanting to talk to/kiss/hug him etc so we let him get on with it. Neal was talking to myself, Rach and Andy about his deep sea diving. He's off to the Red Sea soon. Make sure you come back in one piece OK? He certainly has a lot to say about the subject, he also claims, on a totally different subject, to have the longest tongue in rock n roll!!
So another great night, it was good, once again, to see so many people enjoying the band, and the band so obviously enjoying making the music they make!!
Hi to those of you that came and said hello, and Penny, have you washed it off yet??? (you know what I mean)!!
No pictures of us ugly lot again, my camera battery gave up the ghost.
And no Always On My Mind either, YYYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
