LIVE REVIEW

SIGUE SIGUE SPUTNIK
CONCORDE 2, BRIGHTON 11TH MAY 2002

Someone down at Sputnik HQ must like the seaside as this was Sigue Sigue Sputnik's 3rd live appearance in Brighton in less than 12 months. With a good turn out of the fan base and new material in the set list it promised to be a great night.....and it was. We'd all gathered fairly early (it was an early show after all) and in no time at all the Clockwork Orange intro boomed over the PA and we all hurled ourselves towards the stage. Boom the intro did for all of about 10 seconds after which the sequencer apparently blew a fuse somewhere along the line causing an embarrassing silence followed by an almighty cheer as the problem was quickly rectified. I do wish they'd put some new dialogue on the intro to match the classic 80's version. Anyway smoke filled the stage as we awaited the arrival of the Sputnik's.

Out they trooped, Tony looking fantastic in ripped purple Original Freekster top, small checked black and white trousers and long black coat. Martin was roughing it in denims, his trousers adamantly refusing to stay up and one point. The feathered hat and gloves also made an appearance. Neal looked like a silver dream machine (at least I guess he did to the girlies) and, in keeping with the seaside atmosphere, a pair of sandals!!

Martin promised us a great show as they launched straight into "Mickey Mouse Is Going To Hell" which is already becoming a live favourite. These are the songs that were played but not necessarily in the right order!!!

MICKEY MOUSE IS GOING TO HELL
SEX BOMB BOOGIE
EVERYBODY LOVES U
21ST CENTURY BOY
SSSELEBRATION
FAMILY X
EVERYBODY WANTS WHAT SPUTNIK WANTS
THE KING OF ROCK N ROLL
JAYNE MANSFIELD
SLAVE TRADE
LOVE MISSILE F1-11
encore
ATARI BABY
ROCKIT MISS USA

The all new songs sounded fantastic, Tony asked for forgiveness in advance in case they fucked them up, then proceeded to tell us they all go du da da da da da du da da da du da da da (you know what I mean). Martin lost his way on some of the vocals (nothing new there then) but the boySSS and Jenny really gave their all and put on a great show for a very appreciative audience. The new songs all seem to have been written with the sole intention of getting audiences to scream along with them (especially Family X). I spoke to Tony afterwards about the new songs, he was pleased with how they sounded and with the reaction they got. Apparently he felt that SSSelebration (I assume that's how he's gonna spell it, he said to spell it with 3 S's when I mentioned it) was one of the weaker tracks when they were working in the studio but once he was on-stage playing it live he got a good feeling about it so maybe it will become a mainstay of the set list. He'd already spoken of the difficulties of choosing what to play at each show. Obviously all the material is still relevant as all the SputnikWorld releases are on sale at the gigs. Looking at this set, PirateSpace was represented by just 2 songs and Blak Elvis by only one. Martin told Tony that I'd bollock into him (not literally!!!!!) if they didn't play Alien Christ so he felt quite vindicated when I moaned that it was missing from the set. Please dump Everybody Loves U before Alien Christ next time guys.

So a great night down by the sea in Brighton, marred only by the fact that the venue seemed perfectly unjustified in closing the bar and kicking us out as soon as the show was over AND THEN have the cheek to tell you that you can pay to go back in again. I know it was billed as an early show but they really took the piss so...

FUCK YOU!!!

Play The Gloucester again next time you are in Brighton guySSS.

Some fantastic people who were there with apologies to anyone I've forgotten. Come on you know me by now.
